Barco’s advanced digital solution for dermatology

Barco, an international company providing innovative products and solutions for entertainment and healthcare, wanted to expand its expertise in medical imaging with a new digital solution for dermatologists. The aim was to help dermatologists improve their diagnosis of skin diseases by using high-quality imaging technology and advanced analysis tools.

The solution, called Demetra, allows dermatologists to take high-quality images and store them securely in the cloud, allowing them to track disease progress over a longer period of time. In addition, a machine learning model was developed to support the diagnosis of these images.

Cloud based, serverless architecture

To comply with strict HIPAA regulations, especially given its US application, Barco opted for a cloud-based, serverless architecture. Their previous attempts to develop an on-premises solution failed due to compliancy issues. They enlisted the help of competence centre Cloudway to develop a cloud solution for them.

With the cloud solution, they were able to use HIPAA-compliant services, which allowed the cloud provider to carry large part of the compliance responsibilities. This allowed Barco to focus on creating business value and developing an advanced IoT solution within a 9-month timeframe.

The serverless approach offered another key benefit: cost savings. The solution can scale to zero when no devices are active, which is particularly valuable during the initial roll-out phase when Barco collects feedback and improves the functionality of the solution.

HIPAA-compliant IoT solution

Within 9 months, we delivered a fully HIPAA-compliant IoT solution. The cost of the solution scales with device demand and usage, allowing Barco to confidently bring a new product to market with significantly lower financial risk. This approach allows Barco to effectively deploy their innovative dermatology solution, while remaining flexible and responsive to customer feedback for further improvement and expansion.

Conclusion

By moving to a cloud based, serverless architecture, Barco has successfully developed an advanced HIPAA-compliant solution for the dermatology market. This approach has not only overcome compliance challenges, but also offers cost efficiency and scalability. Barco can now confidently introduce their new product, knowing that it is flexible, secure and future-proof.
